My First Day of Teaching

I had no idea what I was doing on my first day of teaching classes in Korea. I was given nothing more than a book of illustrations that told the story of Little Red Riding Hood. There was a total of ten lines of English in it. And simple lines at that. I was expected to use if for the week. I hadn’t been given any training either, aside from the brief introduction I was given to the students the day before. I was completely clueless as to how to begin.

When I was younger I was a good student. A great student even. I used to study hard. I used to apply myself. And I used to like it. But one day all of that changed. And, believe it or not, I can remember the exact moment it happened.

For the past several years, I have been teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). During that time, I have noticed that most of my students are interested in learning to speak, but aren’t so interested in learning to write. It isn’t that they don’t want to learn it, but that writing can be difficult and intimidating. I do, however, believe that writing is just as important a skill as any of the others. In fact, I think the better you become at writing, the better your English will improve overall.
